| St Saviour's Vicar Fired!
No maybe not actually fired - but it was a great privilege for many members of St Saviours to visit the Cathedral last Friday (29th June) to see Ed Mitchell installed as a Canon of the Cathedral.
What does that mean I hear you ask – well we weren’t sure either so we asked Ed. A Canon, in the singular, is either a law or rule or a person. A person referred to as a Canon may be a member of a chapter or college of priests, typically the chapter of a cathedral. But it is sometimes used as an honorary title bestowed on a person who does faithful work in support of the church. So for once – its an honour deservingly given without necessarily attracting an accompanying increase in workload. As well as being a great honour it earns Ed his own seat in the Cathedral! ( Let’s hope it’s a comfy one)
So with great pride we assembled together with people from Ed’s old church in Wombwell and representatives of High Green Forum to see Ed duly installed together with two other Reverends (John Coghlan and Geoffrey Harbord).
The ceremony itself formed part of the Eucharist and was full of Church of England tradition with a full robed choir and incense. The sermon given by the Dean of the Cathedral related to the recent floods in Sheffield and the hymns (chosen by the Honorary Canons) included ‘Disposer supreme and judge of the earth’, ‘May the mind of Christ, my Saviour’ and ‘In Christ alone my hope is found’.
After the formal celebrations everybody was invited into the Cathedral’s newly refurbished 1554 Gallery for wine and light refreshments. The following evening member of the congregation and the Genesis 2 Youth club gathered in the Church Hall for a BBQ party to mark this honour. Ed prepared an anagram of the names of parish members; although I am unsure how pleased every one was with their anagram. The members of Genesis 2 turned out in strength to say well done to Ed. That in itself is a tribute to how much the young people enjoy having Ed as their ‘glorious leader’ and more importantly as someone who regularly takes an active interest in them.
In all, a truly memorable event and a fitting tribute to our hard working vicar. Steve Lee & Rachel Cranwell |
