"St Saviour's Church, Mortomley, was built in 1872 at a cost of £3,000 as a memorial by the Jeffcock family to the late Parkin Jeffcock , Esq., who lost his life on December 13th, 1886, whilst endeavouring to rescue the victims of the disaster at the Oaks Colliery, near Barnsley. This unfortunate gentleman was brother to the late Rev Canon Jeffcock, of Wolverhampton, and their parents once resided at Mortomley Hall. They were large landowners in the Mortomlety District and great beefactors of the church and only recently their descendants have given to the Church for all time the building used as a Sunday School.
"During late years the church had been beutified , by memorial windows in the memory of the late Mr. W. Darwent (Church warden) and of Lieut. W. J. Flower, who was killed in the great war. There is also a memorial table to the last-named gentleman, as also to Lieut. D. T. Mellor, also killed in the war. A marble tablet was also erected by parishioners to all who fell in the great struggle 1914-1918.
"One of the finest war memorials in local churches was erected by members of the Mortomley St Saviors's Cricket Club to their fellow cricketers who made great sacrifice. It consists of a beautiful oak screen in front of the chancel and it greatly enhances the beauty of the building.
"The reredos was greatly improved by the late Mr. J. Flower as a memorial to his wife and daughter
"In 1922 a stone vestry was added to the church, this being opened in the jubilee year of the sacred edifier.
"During the 41 years vicarite of the Rev. W. Surtees at Chapeltown, the following curates have served at Mortomley: Rev. J. Rigby (5years) , Rev. W. Fairclough (15 years), Rev. W. Mahon (1year), Rev. J.A.A. Kelsey Bell (4years), Rev. T. French ( 2 1/2 years).
"It is worthy of note that three of these gentlemen are vicars in the surrounding district: Mr. Bell at Hillsborough and Wadsley Bridge, Mr. French at Thorpe Hesley, and Mr. Surtees at Grenoside.
"The church possesses a fine choir, a splendid body of Sunday School teachers, and thriving church institutes. The church workers are zealous and enthusistic, and with a competent and successful leader, be able to achieve great things.
"The chieff officers of the church are :-
